TMD / TMJ Treatment
What is a TMJ or a TMD?
Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJ, are the joints that connect your jaw to your skull. When these joints are overused or damaged, they may develop a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. TMDs can cause jaw discomfort, frequent headaches, face swelling, alignment problems, muscle spasms and other issues. Patients with TMDs feel discomfort when they chew and move their jaw, and frequent headaches can keep them from enjoying regular day to day activities.
At Cochran Family Dental, we work to educate our patients about TMDs. We strive to prevent TMJ problems from developing, and check each patient’s temporomandibular joints during their regular appointments to make sure they are healthy and strong. Dr. Cochran cares about his patients and wants to make sure that they always feel comfortable when they are biting or speaking. At our practice, we offer meaningful treatment for our patients who are suffering from temporomandibular disorders.
Our team can provide treatment for any patient who is suffering from a TMD. At Cochran Family Dental, we have the knowledge and the skill to provide relief for your TMD symptoms. TMDs are commonly caused when patients experience frequent teeth grinding at night while they are asleep. Our treatment combats this problem by eliminating your nightly grinding and giving your temporomandibular joints time to heal.
To stop your teeth grinding, we offer TMD treatment using an NTI appliance. NTIs , or noiception trigeminal inhibitors, are small plastic devices that can be placed over your two front teeth at night to prevent canine and molar conflict. Dr. Cochran specially fits each NTI device for each patient for maximum comfort. NTIs are easy to wear and easy to use. You will be able to rest well, while still having control over whether your teeth grind while you sleep.
